On Friday, March 22, 2013, at Rideau Hall, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada,  presented 1 Meritorious Service Cross (Military Division) and 33 Meritorious Service Medals (Military Division) to members of Canadian and allied forces. Lieutenant-Colonel (then Major) Sajjan received the MSM for his exemplary service in Afghanistan.
